After a great day out at the Dryden Centre on Tuesday Lucy, Caleb, Matthew, Beth and Willow, from Year 2, thought it couldn't get any better. However, on Friday they got the opportunity to go along for a celebratory screening of their stop motion animation on the big screen in the new Odeon at the Metro Centre. They also got another chance to meet Oscar Springer animator and filmmaker; maybe they will be joining him on set in the future!!

Let's Create and Animate

Lucy, Caleb, Matthew, Beth and Willow from Year 2, had a great day out when they took part in 'Let's Create and Animate' at the Dryden Centre. They had the opportunity to work alongside Oscar Stringer animator and filmmaker. The children shared their ideas and worked together to plan for their own stop motion animation. They created models, using simple bold designs, with large features making it easier for them to animate. Using software program 'I Can Animate' and a web cam, the children created their own animation. Oscar encouraged the children to preview their animation and evaluate their work as they went along. After they had created their animation they added sound using software program 'Movie Maker' bringing their animation to life. Being creative and hands-on learning, the children had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
They sketched each other in different poses and then took these as inspiration to create models. Using wire, pupils made a frame of their person then covered it in rolled strips of newspaper.
Christmas Shows

This week our pupils have been performing their Christmas Shows and they have all been a great success.

There are certainly some budding stars in the making!

Reception Class performed 'Jesus in a Manger' a traditional nativity play, their acting and singing was tremendous!

Year 1 and Year 2 performed 'A Creepy Crawly Christmas' a thoroughly entertaining show along with brilliant acting and singing from all of the children!

Year 3 performed 'A Tale of two Birthdays'. This tale had action, adventure, magical characters, lots of laughs along with a superb performance from all the children!

Year 4 & 5 performed 'Dick Whittington and his Cat' a popular and well-loved story about Dick, who was down on his luck and decided to head for the city of London to see if the streets were really paved with gold. The show had catchy songs, lots of laughs and of course a 'happy ever after' ending. Providing a great recipe for a thoroughly entertaining show along with fantastic acting and singing from all of the children.

Year 6 performed 'Hansel and Gretal an adaptation of the popular fairytale. Hansel was imprisoned while Gretal 'force fed' him in order to, as the old witch put it 'fatten him up for the Christmas pot! It was great fun to watch with its witty script, catchy songs and some real 'character acting' from the children.

Children rehearsing for their shows!

A Space Odyssey

This term, Year 4 pupils have been working with artist Susan Warlock to create some wonderful 2D canvas paintings based on the topic of space. Pupils drew what they imagined they could see outside of a spaceship. These drawings were then transferred to canvas and pupils used acrylic, 'glow in the dark' and glitter paints. Andrew Adams said, "We learnt how to mix paints and create nice colours."

This term, Year 2 pupils were treated to an alternative Nativity when Zoo Lab visited school! Pupils were given the opportunity to hold some of the animals which may have been in the stable in Bethlehem, but are often forgotten. These included: cockroaches, snakes and rabbits! Lucy Strophair said, "It was really good, because the man brought in some creepy animals. We got to hold a few and learnt about the story of Jesus. My favourite animal was the bunny rabbit, but I was scared of the tarantula!"

Newsreel Project

Year 4 and Year 5 have been working for many weeks on the Newsreel Project and the day of filming finally arrived on the 12th November. Each of the production company had responsibility for their own Space related newsreel This has involved a lot of hard work for each and every member of the team in Pre-production by the creation of the scripts , rehearsal and practising. In addition the children were responsible for the collection and creation of the prop's which were going to be used. The day of the filming was a very enjoyable experience for all the children. Most were able to take on and perform different roles from being the camera person to sound operator, director and even Boom operator. All of our actors and actresses were outstanding (I can see Oscars from some in the future!) and were able to use some green screen technology. The final part of the day saw each Production team helping to edit the film and by adding in some sound and special effects. Most were able to see a rough cut of their final Newsreel by the end of the day. Overall the project was a great success as the children have a good understanding of the whole film making process. We are now looking forward to seeing the final versions in all of their glory as a screening at the Tyneside Cinemais being arranged.

To celebrate 'Everybody Writes Day' on Friday 16th October, an alien spaceship landed in the school garden! The day involved children writing newpaper articles about the incident and presenting them in an assembly at the end of the day. The children interviewed PC Dixon about the incident and his job. Clues such as an alien spaceship, a letter from the aliens and footprints were used to stimulate pupils' writing.

Children in Year 4 and Year 5 visited Gateshead CLC on Thursday where they got the opportunity to work alongside well known children's author Shoo Rayner. Shoo has written over 100 children's books such as Little Horrors, Dark Claw and Ricky Rocket. During the workshop Shoo explained to the children how he gets his inspiration for his stories then, went on to suggests ways to plan stories before you begin to write them. Shoo then encouraged the children to take part in planning a story with him using drawings and key words. The children had a fantastic time sharing their thoughts and ideas freely and generating some fantastic ideas for their story thus, enabling them to produce a plan with a beginning, middle and end.

Opening of Woodgate Park

The whole school got the chance to visit Woodgate Park for it's official opening by the Mayor of Gateshead, John Eagle, on Friday 19th June. The Park has received a massive makeover by Gateshead Council as part of a £1.2m scheme to transform 22 parks across the borough by 2011. The children enjoyed an adventure packed afternoon (as did the staff) as they got to grips with some of the parks new play equipment. A pirate ship, a huge climbing tower, a big sand pit and an aerial slide being just a few of the parks new attractions.

Children getting to grips with the new equipment!

(Can you spot Mrs Messenger?)

Bill Quay's Got Talent

In order to boost our school funds on Wednesday 8th July we hosted a Bill Quay's Got Talent Night. Throughout the night we saw outstanding performances from all the acts who took part in fact, the judges were so overwhelmed by the talent they were unable to choose an overall winner and declared everyone a winner! Our special guests 'Girls Aloud' also gave us a fantastic special performance. Well done to everyone who took part, a fun packed evening was definitely had by all.

A Big Thank You to everyone for their support in making the night a great success raising £288 towards our school funds.

Year 3/4 were lucky enough to visit Heworth CLC on 10th July 2009 to work on the latest ICT technology. They had great fun exploring digital music by creating a short film about an action hero called Jonni Star. They went on to compose the soundtrack and lyrics for the film as well as selecting different sound effects to add to it using a software program called Garage Band. They also had lots of fun using a program called Junior Insight Control to create their own dream bedroom.

NASA Space Shuttle 'Astronauts Land in Gateshead'

Children in Year 5 & Year 6 had a real treat when they visited Gateshead Stadium on 9th July 2009 as they got the opportunity to meet five real-life astronauts. In spectacular style, the team-of-five from Space Shuttle STS119 landed by helicopter at the stadium and were whisked to the sports arena in a limo. The children heard astronaut Mission Commander Lee Archambault and crew members John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Tony Antonelli, and Joe Acaba, dressed in their blue mission jump suits, talk about how they flew to the International Space Station in March to carry out assembly work on board, how they survived in space and how they completed three space walks. The Children had a great day and were very lucky to have met the astronauts, as the space shuttle retires in 2010, this could be the last visit to the UK.

Robin Wood

Year 6 pupils had a fantastic adventure at the Robin Wood Activity Centre near Alston. They developed their team building, listening and communication skills through problem solving, team challenge and orienteering. They faced their darkest fears in the caves and the Piranha pool, scaled Mount Everest on the climbing wall, climbed the heady heights of the trapeze, zipped down the zip-wire and waded courageously through the stream walk. The giant swing was also great fun, relying on fantastic teamwork to give each team member a fabulous swing at the height they were comfortable with. All the pupils had a go at the activities, as did the Bill Quay staff, even when they were more than a little bit nervous about it.

An unforgettable time was experienced by all!!.

Bike Trial Display

Ben Slinger three times Bike Trial World Champion and Danny Butler the European Champion and twice British Champion, visited our school. The whole school came out to watch the boys put on a fantastic display, jumping off tables then back onto them! Ben jumped off his trailer (about 7 feet high) straight down to the floor within inches of Danny (Phew!). The children were enthralled, it was an amazing show. Just take a look at the photos below to prove it.

Electric Safety

Bob Knox from CE Electric came into school to do a special assembly all about how to stay safe around electricity. The children were all very good at identifying possible hazards and were interested to see how electricity can jump. They looked at possible scenarios and how to be safe, such as if they lose a football inside an electric substation. They should ring the phone number on the gate to arrange for someone to bring it back. His main message was to stay away from electric cables and stay safe.

The children got to handle lots of cuddly animals such as rabbits, mice and guinea pigs, and some more unusual ones like snakes and lizards. We had great fun on a very bumpy tractor ride, and in the soft play area. Mrs Wearmouth loved the guinea pigs so much that she bought 2, and they are now living happily in her house.

Year 5 had a great fun when they visited Gateshead CLC on Wednesday morning. Linked to their literacy topic the children started the session by reading a description of the notorious pirate Black Beard. The children then worked independantly writing a paragraph using lots of adjectives, to describe a pirate of their choice. Using the computer the children then recorded their descriptions, adding appropriate musical instrumentals as background music. The children, at the end of the lesson, had the opportunity to listen to some of their finished pieces.

The children were given the challenge of programming a robot to do 5 different movements using a light sensor, ultrasonic sensor and a sound sensor. 'The Bill Quay Electronics' worked brilliantly as a team sharing and implementing their ideas. They performed amazingly in the challenge and were just pipped at the post, finishing in second place. The children split into 3 groups and went around the activities in turn. They had a great time, some of them trying out completely new things. They were extremely lucky with the weather as it was a beautiful day! They came back to school tired out but they all agreed they had had a fantastic time.
