Tudor Lives Workshop

Year 3/4 had a great time when they visited a Tudor Lives Workshop at Segedunum in Wallsend on Wednesday. They learnt what it would have been like to live in Tudor times, whether you were rich or poor and the different life you would have lead. To understand this the children sorted various Tudor objects into the right categories. They also had the opportunity to get dressed as Tudors, plan a Tudor banquet and learn some Tudor dances.

Visit to Leon

The Comenuis project has now begun its second year, with staff meeting in Spain to discuss the next stage. Whilst visiting the beautiful city of Leon Mrs Messenger and Mrs Wearmouth took in the wonderful stained glass windows of Leon Cathedral. It was a sight to behold!
They watched lessons within the school, learned a Spanish dance (Mrs Wearmouth was excellent at this - or so she thinks!) and experienced traditional Spanish food.

We will be taking pupils to Leon in March as part of the project to develop their own Spanish experiences.

Bowes Museum

Children in Year 6 had a great day out at Bowes Museum on Wednesday 19th November when they took part in a Portraits and Portraiture Workshop. By studying painting by world famous artist Giovanni Antoni Canaletto, with artist Beth, they learnt things paintings can reveal through expression, setting and pose. The children then used expression, posture and pose to create characters from the paintings. During the workshop the children took turns posing as characters from the Second World War while the others sketched them. At the end of the workshop the children had the opportunity to look around the museum.

Children posing as different characters in the painting.

To make the most of their Bowes Museum visit Vicky, a professional artist from the museum, came into school the next day to show the children how to make sculptures. Year 6 children discussed and planned what character they were going to create based on the Second World War. They chose characters such as Hitler, Winston Churchill, German, American and British soldiers as well as a child evacuee. They talked with Vicky about what their characters actions, pose and stance would be then they sketched their character. When they had finished their sketch they worked alongside Vicky as she showed them step by step how to make an armature (frame) using garden cane, scrunched up paper and masking tape. This frame was then attached to a baseboard using wire, the children then painted their armatures. The children had great fun making them and the finished characters looked absolutely fantastic!

Enterprise Day

Monday 17th November saw the whole school take part in an 'Enterprise Day' in the style of Dragon's Den. Children in Key Stage 2 were organised into mixed age groups with Year 6 pupils taking the lead. Each group designed and created something to sell at the Christmas Fayre. They presented their ideas to 4 dragons who then chose one group to produce a Christmas shaker for the fayre. One of the dragons was Mr Patterson a Governor for maths and business enterprise.

News Real Project

This term pupils in Year 5 & 6 have been taken part in 'News Real' projects organised by the Tyneside Cinema. Both projects have engaged the children in filmmaking in a creative and exciting way. Inspired by watching original newsreels, pupils in Year 5 & Year 6 worked alongside professional filmmakers to create their own piece of newsreel footage on life in the Victorian times (Year 5) and life during the Second World War (Year 6). These projects will culminate with a celebratory screening of the children's films in the Tyneside Cinema, where the news was first screened over 70 years ago as well as in school.

Dates to be confirmed.

After the cockroach he explained the next level of the food chain. With the help of a large snail, a frog, a tarantula spider and a snake, he demonstrated how a food chain could be turned into a food web.

The Day a Giant Came to School

To celebrate 'Everybody Writes Day' on Friday 24th October, a giant came to school!
The day involved children writing police reports, letters back to the giant and newpaper articles. PC Dixon and a photographer spoke to pupils about their jobs and Mr Stott, Mrs Brown and the school cook acted as witnessess.
Year 5 work with Beamish

On Monday we were visited by a lady from Beamish who came to work with us on our topic about the Victorians. We had lots of tasks to do to gather evidence about a miner called James Harris who travelled from Cornwall to Cramlington during Victorian times. We had to use rubbings of his gravestone and census records to fit together the pieces of his life and were able to see some of the tools he would have used in the mine. Two days later, we went to Beamish and had a Victorian style lesson in the school. We had to sit with straight backs and call the teacher Ma'am. After that we went down the mine to see what life was like for James Harris and visited the miner's cottages. We spent the afternoon looking around the town. It was a fantastic day out and everyone enjoyed seeing the Victorian times come to life!

Give Racism the Red Card

Year 6 visited Gateshead Civic Centre on the 15th October for the opening of Give Racism the Red Card.

This is what Daniel Brunskill had to say about the trip.

Give Racism the Red Card, is an event which targets racism and tries to stop it. The campaign has been going for many years and Gateshead joined this year to make Gateshead a place with ZERO tolerance for racism. When we got to the event at the Civic Centre there were children from other schools already there then we were joined by children from a secondary school. Then councillors arrived and sat down with Newcastle Falcons rugby player Joe and Dean an ex Middlesbrough player. We then watched a DVD about famous footballers getting racial abuse from the crowd. Some players are using their role model status to stamp out racism by getting everyone involved in Gateshead.
Then Jane from Give Racism the Red Card spoke to us and the other schools given us an example of racism she said "all the people with blue eyes are going home and people with brown eyes are staying". She then asked us how we felt and we said sad, cross and angry. After that a man from South America danced for us and got some people up to dance with him. including children from Year 6. Then Newcastle United footballer Shola Ameobi joined us and we got his autograph and a photo with him. We then had a question and answer session and the best two questions asked won a pair of tickets to see Newcastle United v West Bromwich Albion.

Thanks for that brilliant report Daniel!

Year 1 took a trip to Aldi to find out about the final part in a fruit or vegetables journey from seed to sale. First we searched for unusual foods that we had not seen before and wrote down their names. We saw butternut squash, avocado, chilli peppers and asparagus. Next we tasted a range of fruit and vegetables and described how they tasted. Lastly, Mrs Lane gave us a bag of fruit and vegetables to talk about back at school.

Children from Year 5 and Year 6 had a fantastic day at the Newcastle Falcons rugby ground last week. They spend the morning touring the ground with Danny, then they watched some of the players training in the gym and saw the player's dressing room. They even had the chance to sit on the bench where Jonny Wilkinson sits before a match. Then Danny took them on to the rugby pitch for some tag rugby training. The afternoon was spent in the computer suite where all the children were engaged in an advertising campaign for the Falcons. They each made an advertising DVD which they were allowed to bring home with them.

Operation Christmas Child

This week we had a visit from Operation Christmas Child which we support every year. It gives our children a great opportunity to share gifts that are personal to them with some of the poorest and most marginalised children in the world. All you need to do is follow the instructions in the promotional leaflet and send your shoe box into school with your child if possible, before the end of October.

Year 3/4 were lucky enough to have a visitor last week. Mr Mulholland, design and technology
specialist, came into school to teach the pupils how to make electrical games. They learned about different materials and which were conductors and insulators.
They then went on to use their knowledge of materials to create a 'buzzer game’ using electrical circuits. It was then that they made a class 'operation game' where parts needed taking out of the body without setting off the buzzer! "We made electricity, made games and had lots of fun" Jack.

Year 3/4 took part in a skeletons workshop as part of their ‘Funny Bones ' topic. The Hancock Museum brought in a selection of animal bones for pupils to study and match with the animal pictures. They measured the length of a dog's skull and humerus (arm) and compared it with the size of their own.. It was amazing to see how small and delicate the bones of several of the animals were particularly the mole and fish.

Visit From A Famous Author

Keystage 1 and 2 children had the fantastic opportunity this week of meeting Jose Hofstede, author of the children's books Brave Hunter, who came all the way from the Netherlands to visited our school. She talked to the children about writing her books (which took her about 6 hours to write just 3 pages). She also told the children about the characters in her books and showed them her website. Then she read them a chapter from the first Brave Hunter book she wrote. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story and are looking forward to buying her book and finding out what happens next in the story in.

They took part in a 'Rock Pool Ramble' and spent time looking at creatures found around the coast in the aquarium inside the Lighthouse. The rain didn't even stop them from making a beautiful mermaid from seaweed they found on the beach!

Writing Competiton

Five children from Year 6 Lucy, Amy, Holly, Natasha and Jordan had a fantastic opportunity this week as they visited Lord Lawson School in Birtley to represent Bill Quay in a writing competition. They met Peter J Murray, award-winning author of Mokee Joe, as he launched the writing competition. He read an introduction to a story then the children were asked to come up with a fantastic ending to it, in no more than 1000 words. The top three story endings were then to be selected by the judges. Unfortunately Bill Quay didn't get chosen but, this challenge certainly ignited the children's imagination and they had great fun sharing ideas for their story.

Well done to everyone who took part.

Initially cloudy skies did little to cast a shadow over the fun we had at our annual Summer Fayre. We had lots of attractions for everyone’s amusement including stocks, coconut shy, hoop-la, netball shoot, nail painting, decorate a biscuit, cake stall, adopt a teddy, tombola, raffle and a penalty shoot-out game amongst many others.
A big thank you is given to everyone who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm to help out on the day and indeed to everyone else who came just to be part of the fun and help to raise approximately £1,000 towards our school fund.

Visit from Artist Pippa Bell

Year 6 children enjoyed a visit from artist Pippa Bell, they spent time with her looking at Maritime paintings. Pippa discussed the different techniques the artists had used to create the sea in their paintings such as ' Divisionism’ a technique used by artists which involves breaking colour into its basic elements and painting in very small and regular dots. From a distance the multiple dots form an optical mixture of colour. She also showed the children the way in which the artists had used oil or watercolours, blending, different brush sizes and brush strokes to create the surface of the sea and the formation of the waves.

Visit to Durham

The beautiful city of Durham was the destination of Year 2/3's latest visit. They went to the Archaeology Museum on the banks of the River Wear to take part in a Greek Workshop.
Pupils learned about the Ancient Olympic Games and the events included within them. They then made laurel wreaths - the sign that someone had won their event. No gold medals in those days!
Greek artefacts were handled and examined, while children tried to determine what they were used for. They then had to work out what this object told them about Greek life.
In addition to this, the children learned to write their names using the Greek alphabet and to make some lovely posters decorated with Greek designs.
After lunch they all went on a walk through Durham to admire the Cathedral, Castle and the beautiful cobbled streets.

Visit to Heworth City Learning Centre

Children from Years 4 & 5 visited the CLC over 2 days. Year 5 worked on composing a sound track, selecting different sound effects to add to it, using a software programme called ‘Garage Band’. They went on to add their music to a short space film using the software programme 'I movie'. They also had the opportunity to use data loggers to collect and graph information about light, sound and temperature. Year 4 children had the challenge of helping Harry Potter rescue Professor Dumbledore. In their quest to help Harry they had the chance to fly on broomsticks, retrieve magic treasures and write their own spells, using the latest technology equipment. During the visits both classes had the chance to make their own short animation using a software programme called 2 Animate.
They are now looking forward to having a film premiere and watching all their work back at school!

Year 6 children took part in a workshop at the Laing Art Gallery this week. First they were met by Simon, a professional artist at the gallery, who showed them work by artist Charles Napier Henry, a well known outstanding Marine and Landscape artist in the North East, from 1841 to 1917. The children looked at how he had painted waves in his paintings then starting with a 'ground' of blue, they worked alongside Simon creating their own painting using ideas from the paintings.

Taffy Thomas, a storyteller from Grasmere, and his wife Chrissy came into school to tell us some stories. Key Stage 2 children spent an hour with him first then it was the turn of Key Stage 1. Taffy told us some riddles and some stories which some people got to join in with. He then showed us his £4,000 ‘Tale Coat’ and ‘Porky Pie Hat’ which was made by Paddy Killer, a textile artist from Gateshead. Each picture on the coat refers to a story in Taffy's repertoire and some of the children were able to choose a story by pointing at a picture. Each class were also left a picture of Taffy in his coat to colour in.
Finally, Taffy reminded us that if speaking was more important than listening we'd have two tongues and only one ear!

Year 2/3 had a fantastic day out last week when they visited Cragside House & Gardens linked to their topic work on Lord Armstrong. They had a guided tour around the house and saw lots of interesting rooms. Crayside House was the first home to have hydro-electric power and Lord Armstrong was very interested in using hydraulics for moving and lifting things. They found out lots facts about Lord Armstrong's life and really enjoyed looking at his fascinating home.
Did you know his nephew inherited £600 million when Lord Armstrong died in 1900 and that he had lost all the money within ten years? They were very shocked by this!
Many of the children had already been back to have another look around as they loved it so much.

Key Stage 2 children were visited last week by the 'Nowt As Strange As' music workshop. Each class spent an afternoon with Lily and Dave learning about music from the North East. They listened to 'When the boat comes in' more commonly known as 'fishy on a dishy' and learnt to sing the chorus. Children in Year 5 had a go at step dancing to the Morpeth rant before finding an instrument each to join in playing along to a flute tune from Durham called the Rusty Gully. Year 6 children had the opportunity to accompany Lily and Dave on the penny whistle playing along to the tune of Hot Cross Buns.

There's most definately some budding musicians in the making!

Bike It Club

Bike It Clubs will be taking place on Tuesdays this half term.

As the weather gets better they aim to go on a few bike rides. In preparation for this there will be playground bike-skills sessions. ALL children MUST bring a helmet for these sessions to be able to take part. Wilkinsons and Woolworths do good quality ones for about £6, bright clothes are advisable, too.

"If you think you can help out with marshalling these rides, please contact the school - all you need is a bike and a smile! I hope your child can come!" James Adamson (Bike It Club)

Visit to The Discovery Museum Newcastle

As part of National Science Week Year 5 took part in 'Professor Brainstorm's Exploding Science Show' at The Discovery Museum in Newcastle. Professor Brainstorm showed them how to use science to perform 'magic' tricks like hammering a nail in with a banana and making a balloon shrink and blow itself back up again by using liquid nitrogen. They also looked around the Fashion works exhibition at look at the use of pattern an how it has changed over time. Finally, they had lots of fun exploring the activities in the science maze.

Like the outfits girls!

Visit to Newcastle Life Centre

To enhance their scientific knowledge and understanding, Year 6 visited the Life Centre, in Newcastle, during Science Week.
Using their own handmade gliders and rockets, children investigated gravity, thrust and air resistance in a 'Forces in Motion' workshop.
Other exciting experiences included a visit to 'The Dome' where children observed the night sky, and exhilarating trip through a gold mind on 'The Motion Ride' and a chance to test skills and reflexes in the 'Life Arcade'
The children had a fantastic day and were disappointed when it came to an end!

World Maths Day

Children at Bill Quay, along with nearly 300,000 students from around the world, took part in 'World Maths Day' on 5th March 2008. This year World Maths Day broke the record and became the largest ever educational event! It's aim was to raise numeracy standards in a fun and meaningful way through children taken part in a global online maths challenge. The children united to set a world record in answering mental arithmetic questions in four categories: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
At Bill Quay we took the event even further and had a whole day of mathematical fun! All the children enjoyed maths activities that incorporated other areas of the curriculum such as art, outdoor games, design technology and literacy.
