Dilly Line Project

Every week for the past 7 weeks, eight boys chosen from year 5/6 have taken part in the Dilley Line Project and have worked alongside a graphic designer, Dan Civicco. They also worked alongside Colgate School.

With him, they learned about graphic design culminating in the design for the Soul Soup Project. The boys worked very hard to come up with an original idea to front this product. They learnt about the importance of strap lines when trying to promote something new and exciting.

Once the children had designed a suitable logo, they were very lucky and had the opportunity to go to Northern Print to actually screen print the logo onto T-shirts. They also designed the logo for the bag for the ingredients. The boys visited Dan's studio so they could see where he actually worked on a day to day basis. They visited designers based in the Ouseburn Valley and learnt a little about where designers took their ideas from and then how to use them.

On the last trip, the boys had the opportunity to visit Potts the Printers in Cramlington to see their hard work being printed.

The boys have thoroughly enjoyed this project and have worked extremely hard on a very worthwhile and exciting cause.

Alnwick Castle

Year 2 had an exciting day out at Alnwick Castle on Monday. They visited the Knight's Quest in the castle grounds where they stepped back through the ages to experience the world of a medieval knight. They learnt all about the life of the medieval knights and how the castle served as a Knight School! They became school trainees and dressed up as a knight or a princess. They learnt how a knight would start their life in a castle as a page and then move up to the role of a squire. It was the duty of a knight to learn how to fight and so serve their lord according to the Code of Chivalry. They meet the Dragon Master to learn all about dragons and master the sword. They also got the opportunity to make their own amulets of clay to wear around their neck before going into battle. After their training session they entered the Dragon's lair which was a dark and mysterious place, they make their way past the ghouls and ghosts, through the hall of mirrors and finally came face to face with Northumberland's fiersome dragon!!!

Visits to Bill Quay Farm

Reception class has been visiting Bill Quay farm where they have been taken part in lots of different activities. On their first visit they investigated newly planted fruit trees which had been planted by individual members of staff at the farm. They have been in competition with each other to see who could grow the biggest fruit tree! They got the chance to learn about different animal habitats as well as meeting lots of chickens, goats and different types of sheep, including some new babies. During another visit the children fed the sheep and sat on hay in the classroom to learn all about the sheep's wool. They even got the opportunity to feel the wool. Before leaving they coloured in some sheep pictures. Another activity the children took part in was cleaning Twiggy and Ruby the resident pig sisters. Once the pigs had been hosed down the children used soap and a sponge to scrub them both clean. During their bath, Twiggy took a liking to Mrs Wearmouth and nearly knocked her over! Mrs Wearmouth stood her ground and calmed down the very excited Twiggy. Reception then rubbed baby oil into the pigs to keep them nice and soft.

Gosforth Synagogue

As Year 1 arrived at the synagogue they were greeted by the Rabbi and were offered the choice of wearing a kippah (Jewish scull cap). All of the boys wore a kippah and even some of the girls!
After taking their seats in the temple of worship, they were told the story of Moses and how he led the Jews out of Egypt. Year 1 then acted out the story which helped them remember what happened. They were then told what happens during Jewish festivals like the Passover and got to have a look at the magnificent Torah (Jewish sacred book). The Rabbi showed them how he wore his tallit shawl when reading the Torah. They also learnt the symbol of the Jewish people which is the Magen David, also known as the Star of David. The Rabbi showed them the Menorah which holds the seven candles displayed in a Jewish synagogues. It symbolises the burning bush as seen by Moses on Mount Sinai. He also told them about the nine candle- holders which are only used during the Jewish festival of Hanukka. They leant how the Jewish holy day of the Sabbath starts at sunset on Friday and continues until sunset on Saturday. During which time the Jews do nothing that might be counted as work. After the Rabbi kindly answered all their questions, they thanked him for inviting them into his place of worship. The children had a fun filled morning learning all about Judaism.

Susan Warlock, artist in the community, has been working with year three pupils on a six week art project based around the topic they have been studying 'Ancient Greeks'. Each week she focused on one of the many Greek myths starting with Medusa then Pegasus, Pandora's Box and Arachne. The children were told the story then Susan worked with the class to create a character creature or scene from each tale using both 3D and 2D work. For their final session, the children made a colourful banner made up of individual felt collages of characters or objects from the Greek stories.

Great North Museum

Children in Year 3 had a fantastic day out at the Great North Museum on Monday. To start the day off they were met by Pericles, a Greek Hoplite soldier from Sparta. He told the children about his life as a soldier and what challenges he had to overcome to become a successful Spartan warrior. He then introduced the children to a fellow Greek Hoplite and explained about the uniform he was wearing. He also showed the children what a soldier would carry with him when going into battle. Some children got the opportunity to dress up as a Spartan boy and Spartan girl. To end the morning session, Pericles told the children an ancient Greek myth about Theseus and the Minotaur. To compliment the day, in the afternoon the children got the chance to visit the Ancient Greeks Gallery.

Throughout the week children from Bill Quay have had the opportunity to visit the CLC at Gateshead to take part in various ICT workshops. Year 4 and 5 got the opportunity to explore digital music by using Sony Jam Trax software, to record their voices and compose their own music. They also had great fun playing on the Wii and recording their achievements. The children will use the data collected to create tables and graphs.
Year 2 had great fun using ShayPeds toys to explore 2D and 3D geometric shapes. They also used a software program called Photo Shoot as well as the SheyPeds, to create a short film.

They then listened to a story about the King of Spain who entrusted his treasure chest to Sailor Sam whose ship went missing in the open sea, with the treasure onboard. Using 2simple 2draw software, the children drew their own pictures of the treasure chest under the sea. After lunch the children wrote their own story ending of what happened to the Kings treasure using 2create software. They also got the opportunity to program and control a Bee Bot, to find missing treasure on a treasure map. The Bee Bot is a small dome shaped portable controlled technology robot, which provided an ideal entry path for the children to the world of robotics. The children had a fantastic time using lots of new software and technology!

Dove Marine Laboratory

This term linked to the Robinson Crusoe Project, Year 5 children spent the day at the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats. They explored the rocky shore directly outside the laboratory, to find plants and animals which would have helped Robinson Crusoe survive on his desert island. Inside the laboratory the children described where on the rocky shore they had found each plant or animal. They also completed a dietary components wheel looking at the nutritional content of each organism. The children then got the opportunity to sample different kinds of seafood. During the afternoon session the children explored the caves around the laboratory then designed their own shelter out of different materials. When completed the shelters were tested to see if they could withstand the elements of coastal weather conditions, The children had lots of fun learning about rocky shore organisms and building their shelters!

They then looked at the different bridges along the River Tyne and the different shapes that they were made up from. The class then split into four groups and were set the challenge of building a bridge with as little paper and paper clips as possible. The bridges were then put to the test. Mrs Kitson sang songs liked to the North East with the children and they got the opportunity to play some musical instruments as they sang. Children took part in a Music Workshop with Mr Treherne where they leant some popular Tyneside songs such as The Blaydon Races and the Lampton Worm.

Whickham Thorns

Initially cloudy skies did little to cast a shadow over the fun Year 5 had when they visited Whickham Thorns on Friday. They developed their team building, listening and communication skills through problem solving and team challenges. During one of the team challenges the children were split into two teams and asked to build a waterproof shelter made from plastic bags, string and large twigs. Both teams rose to the challenge sharing their ideas and opinions on what would work best.

Children having great fun building their shelters!!

Whitley Bay Playhouse

Year 3 children visited the Whitley Bay Playhouse to watch George's Marvellous Medicine, which is one of Roald Dahl's funniest and most exciting stories. The children enjoyed the tale of a young boy who made a fantastic new medicine to cure his grandmother of her terrifying temper. But, when his grandmother drank his special new potion, the results were explosive and the most incredible things began to happen. The children thoroughly enjoyed watching the show as Georges amazing adventure unfolded.

Dance City

Children from Year 4, 5 & 6 visited Dance City in Newcastle to watch Tees Valley Dance perform Kick Off. Using football as its inspiration Kick off was a light-hearted piece about exploring the games played by two friends. Injuries, arguments, winners, losers, rules and tactics were all incorporated within the dance performance. After the show the children took part in a workshop with the choreographer of the show and members of the dance group. They got the opportunity to perform dance routines from the show and ask lots of questions about the performance.

The children are really looking forward to working with Tees Valley Dance again when they visit school at the end of the month.

Lucy, Caleb, Matthew, Beth and Willow from Year 2, had a great day out when they took part in 'Let's Create and Animate' at the Dryden Centre. They had the opportunity to work alongside Oscar Stringer animator and filmmaker. The children shared their ideas and worked together to plan for their own stop motion animation. They created models, using simple bold designs, with large features making it easier for them to animate. Using software program 'I Can Animate' and a web cam, the children created their own animation. Oscar encouraged the children to preview their animation and evaluate their work as they went along. After they had created their animation they added sound using software program 'Movie Maker' bringing their animation to life. Being creative and hands-on learning, the children had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Year 6 went to Bowes Museum to take part in an Art Workshop based around People in Action. They sketched each other in different poses and then took these as inspiration to create models. Using wire, pupils made a frame of their person then covered it in rolled strips of newspaper. Using Modroc, plaster of Paris bandage to finish their sculpture, giving them a hardened finish. Once back at school, children painted their sculptures to produce a person.

Christmas Shows

This week our pupils have been performing their Christmas Shows and they have all been a great success.

There are certainly some budding stars in the making!

Reception Class performed 'Jesus in a Manger' a traditional nativity play, their acting and singing was tremendous!

Year 1 and Year 2 performed 'A Creepy Crawly Christmas' a thoroughly entertaining show along with brilliant acting and singing from all of the children!

Year 3 performed 'A Tale of two Birthdays'. This tale had action, adventure, magical characters, lots of laughs along with a superb performance from all the children!

Year 4 & 5 performed 'Dick Whittington and his Cat' a popular and well-loved story about Dick, who was down on his luck and decided to head for the city of London to see if the streets were really paved with gold. The show had catchy songs, lots of laughs and of course a 'happy ever after' ending. Providing a great recipe for a thoroughly entertaining show along with fantastic acting and singing from all of the children.

Year 6 performed 'Hansel and Gretal an adaptation of the popular fairytale. Hansel was imprisoned while Gretal 'force fed' him in order to, as the old witch put it 'fatten him up for the Christmas pot! It was great fun to watch with its witty script, catchy songs and some real 'character acting' from the children.

Children rehearsing for their shows!

A Space Odyssey

This term, Year 4 pupils have been working with artist Susan Warlock to create some wonderful 2D canvas paintings based on the topic of space. Pupils drew what they imagined they could see outside of a spaceship. These drawings were then transferred to canvas and pupils used acrylic, 'glow in the dark' and glitter paints. Andrew Adams said, "We learnt how to mix paints and create nice colours."

Zoo Lab

This term, Year 2 pupils were treated to an alternative Nativity when Zoo Lab visited school! Pupils were given the opportunity to hold some of the animals which may have been in the stable in Bethlehem, but are often forgotten. These included: cockroaches, snakes and rabbits! Lucy Strophair said, "It was really good, because the man brought in some creepy animals. We got to hold a few and learnt about the story of Jesus. My favourite animal was the bunny rabbit, but I was scared of the tarantula!"

Newsreel Project

Year 4 and Year 5 have been working for many weeks on the Newsreel Project and the day of filming finally arrived on the 12th November. Each of the production company had responsibility for their own Space related newsreel This has involved a lot of hard work for each and every member of the team in Pre-production by the creation of the scripts , rehearsal and practising. In addition the children were responsible for the collection and creation of the prop's which were going to be used. The day of the filming was a very enjoyable experience for all the children. Most were able to take on and perform different roles from being the camera person to sound operator, director and even Boom operator. All of our actors and actresses were outstanding (I can see Oscars from some in the future!) and were able to use some green screen technology. The final part of the day saw each Production team helping to edit the film and by adding in some sound and special effects. Most were able to see a rough cut of their final Newsreel by the end of the day. Overall the project was a great success as the children have a good understanding of the whole film making process. We are now looking forward to seeing the final versions in all of their glory as a screening at the Tyneside Cinemais being arranged.
